Owen takes Euro crown
The Ring magazine
February 1980

European Championship belt

Johnny Owen of Wales avenged the only blemish on his record when he dethroned European bantamweight champion Juan Rodriguez (31), Spain, winning the 12 rounder on points. In their first encounter, a year ago, Owen was the loser on a home-town decision in Spain. This time, the Welshman was at home and Rodriguez was having his first engagement abroad.

Owen is the 13th Briton to wear the crown since Joe Bowker reigned in 1910. It was the division's 107th bout and Owen is the 44th champion.

Referee Max Strangfeld, Denmark, judges Angelo Poletti, Italy, and Edmond Meulenberg, Belgium, all scored in favor of Owen, 120-115, 119-117 and 119-115, respectively.
